The Defensive Handgun II class often meets the requirements for obtaining a Carry Concealed Weapon (CCW) permit in many CA jurisdictions, as well as in a number of other states. Through a combination of classroom and range training over two days, we will cover the knowledge and skills required to carry a firearm for personal protection outside the home.

We follow the NRA Personal Protection Outside the Home (PPOH) Course. Upon completing the class, you will receive a certificate from 29 Outdoor Gear, a full-service FFL gun store and approved training provider for Napa, Solano, and Sonoma County Sheriff’s Departments, and City of Napa, Central Marin, Town of Ross, City of Winters, and San Francisco  Police Departments. Several other law enforcement agencies recognize our CCW training as well, such as the Marin, Sacramento, Yolo, Contra Costa and Alameda County Sheriff’s Departments and Martinez Police Department – ask the agency you are applying to if our training course will meet their requirements. Our instructors are, at minimum, NRA Certified, and many hold multiple credentials such as DOJ, BSIS, POST, and USCCA. Threat Scenarios is the training division of 29 Outdoor Gear.

Day 1 (8-Hours Classroom):

Students will:
*Learn ethical responsibility, defensive mindset/awareness, and how to avoid, respond to and control an encounter.
*Discuss legal considerations including proportionate use of force, CCW insurance, and the aftermath of a shooting.
*Prepare a plan including firearm/holster selection, and good habits such as scanning and assessing the environment.

Day 2 (8-Hours Range):

While emphasizing safety, students will:
*Improve draw, accuracy, speed shooting, and target acquisition skills (including point shooting).
*Move to, use, and shoot from behind cover.
*Practice response drills (left, right, rear), and retention shots.

The Defensive Handgun series is designed to take students from static line shooting into applying their skills in a real world environment.  Through the supervision of our instructors, you will learn how to fight back with a firearm while under stress.

Prerequisites:

Ideally, the student should have a working knowledge of handguns, their safe handling, and some experience. However, due to the high instructor-to-student ratio and small class size, we often are able to adapt to those with little or no experience. Students who do not demonstrate an adequate level of safety or comprehension of the class material may be invited to return to a later class after completing some additional training.

What to Bring:

Gear: Ear protection (electronic is preferred), eye protection (wrap around glasses or glasses with some form of side protection preferred); athletic shoes, boots, or cleats.
We shoot outdoors so check the weather and dress accordingly. Class will proceed rain or shine, unless the conditions become unsafe.

Firearm: Reliable semi-automatic handgun or revolver with three or more magazines (or speed loaders, for revolvers).

Holster: A rigid OUTSIDE THE WAISTBAND holster that does not collapse when the firearm is removed, and at least two magazine or speed loader pouches. Holsters must be worn on the hip or thigh on the strong side; and magazine holders must be worn on the belt. Serpa-type holsters with a release button that must be activated by the user’s trigger finger are not allowed

Ammo: At least 350 rounds for the various drills we fire during class.  Additionally, you will need 100 rounds per handgun for the qualification test; you must shoot and qualify with each gun you want listed on your permit, and you’re allowed to shoot it twice per gun for a passing score (the qualification course of fire is 50 rounds). Some people shoot/reload faster than others. How much ammunition you want to use is up to you.

Personal: Bring your own lunch (there will be a 30 minute break). There is not enough time to leave and return. Cold water will be provided.
Closed-toe shoes and long pants are required; lightweight long sleeve shirts are encouraged; a hat is recommended.

For those that want to take either the class (or range day portion) without applying for a CCW, rental firearm packages are available. Each package contains a modern, reliable handgun such as a Glock, three magazines, electronic ear protection, safety glasses, and speed loader. The rental package is $45 for the day. If you would like to reserve a rental package, select the appropriate ticket option after clicking the red ‘Book Now’ button below.

Registered students will receive an email from staff about 1 to 2 weeks prior to class with many details – keep an eye on our inbox for this message. It is suggested you add the domain threatscenarios.com to your ‘safe senders’ or ‘white’ list so the email does not go to your junk or spam folder.
We will start at 9am sharp and continue to around 5pm. Please arrive 15 minutes before the class starts to complete paperwork and safety inspection of your equipment.

For additional questions about our CCW classes, please view our FAQ.

In the event of a conflict of information between our website, FAQ, this class listing, or information received from our staff – the information from staff is the most current and prevailing.
